Lors du Congrès annuel de l'American Sociological Association qui s'est tenu à San Francisco du 17 au 20 juillet 2014, Marcel Fournier a reçu, pour son livre Emile Durkheim: A Biography (Polity), le prix de la Section Histoire de la sociologie de l'ASA pour la meilleur livre universitaire de l'année. 

Les membres du comité étaient: Silvia Pedraza (présidente), Nico Stehr, et Julie Zimmerman. Ils ont affirmé que : "Fournier's book gives readers a wonderful sense of "the man, Emile Durkheim, in flesh and blood," and showed beautifully "how he (and his family) reacted to the winds of change that buffeted him. It is an outstanding contribution, and most deserving of this prize".
